Dr. Rebecca Li’s Illuminating Silence Event
On the evening of March 10, we were privileged to have Dr. Rebecca Li lead a guided meditation session, followed by a lecture and a book signing event.
During the meditation, Dr. Li guided participants to deeply relax each part of their body, helping us to feel the sensation of relaxation and bring our focus entirely to the present moment, enhancing our awareness of our physical state.
Dr. Li humorously pointed out in her lecture that the goal of meditation isn’t to achieve perfection in counting breaths from 1 to 10, nor is it about earning an “A” grade. The true purpose of meditation is to cultivate clarity of mind. She emphasized that it’s important not to get upset by distracting thoughts, not to yearn for inner peace as if it were a tangible reward, and not to strive for a mind devoid of thoughts. Instead, we should let thoughts pass freely. Meditation is a moment-to-moment practice. However, this doesn’t mean that we can skip seated meditation or counting breaths. These practices are like training wheels that help train our minds and enhance our mental clarity.
Dr. Li further explained in her new book how the practice of silent illumination can offer a reference for students to integrate their retreat experiences into daily life. She delves into why silent illumination is considered a “method of no-method”, emphasizing the importance of being fully present and aware without automatically reacting to thoughts or becoming overwhelmed by them.
